internet addresses

Every computer on the internet or a network has a number with which it can be identified. It is similar like a telephone number which is also unique. This unique number is called an IP address. Usually companies have their own IP addresses or even whole ranges. Because you have access to the internet through your internet provider you use an IP address that is provided by your internet provider.

The helpdesk asks for an IP address, now what?

Whether you use Fiber, ADSL, Cable or a telephone line, sooner or later malfunctions do occur. Sometimes an helpdesk employee needs your IP address to solve the issues you have. You can easily find it above in red.

Your location via IP

Your location can be (approximately) determined based on an IP address. Sometimes your computer is behind a proxy server or you use a VPN connection, so that a different IP address is used and it appears that you are in a different location.
